Netball Northern ran workshops at Kerikeri and Whangārei netball centres last month, providing Northland coaches with new skills and the opportunity to connect with other coaches.

A highlight of the workshops was special guest Leigh Gibbs, Silver Ferns Selector and the NNZ Community Coach Manager, who delivered the module 'Centre Pass' as part of the Netball NZ Community Coach Award 2.

Centre Pass with Leigh Gibbs

During the session with Leigh, coaches were presented with various scenarios related to attack and defence of the centre pass. They were tasked with devising strategies for successful attacks and turnovers on defence.

To enhance the exercise, Sharleen Morrell, Netball Northern Umpire Lead, shared valuable tips regarding the rules for each scenario.

Skills Analysis & Fundamental Movements

Netball Northern’s Amelia Pasco, Katie Adamson, and Tania Heap facilitated the workshop ‘Skills Analysis & Fundamental Movements’ as part of the Netball NZ Community Coach Award 1.

Tania says assessing and improving players' skills was an area of focus.

“We talked about a closed and open skill, and the significance of agility, balance and coordination,” she says.

“It’s always great when coaches can see those minor adjustments in movement, which can lead to significant improvements in players' performance,” says Tania

Intertwining NetballSmart

Taking the coaches through the NetballSmart dynamic warmup, Amelia says they spent time delving deeper into fundamental movements and how they relate to netball skills.

“It's important coaches add strength training to their sessions,” explains Amelia.

“By explaining the value of it, we hope more coaches continue to take this up.”

Value to coaches

The sessions attracted coaches from all over Te Tai Tokerau.

Whangārei Girls High School year 9 coach, Rena Belcher, attended the Whangārei evening and says the two workshops were fantastic.

“We had coaches from year 7&8, right through to more senior team coaches, and there was something that everyone could take away.”

Rena says it was a great opportunity to share with others and build on their skills together, and having senior netballers spend the time with them, was fantastic.

“We very much appreciate the support to our local coaches in this environment.”

The CCA Modules are designed to ensure we take a holistic approach to coaching and physical literacy.  ‘What to coach’ is helpful, but ‘how to coach’ is what really makes an impact.

If you would like support and new ideas on how to be an effective coach, come along to a Community Coach Workshop.

Workshops take place regularly throughout the zone and are usually promoted on the zone and netball centre’s websites, monthly newsletters and Facebook pages.
