The Northland Development Day was recently held by Netball Northern, bringing together coaches and players for a day dedicated to skill enhancement and collaboration.
The event featured sessions led by Northern Mystics Assistant Coach, Rob Wright, Northern Marvels Assistant Coach, Melissa Bessell, Netball Northern Coach Lead, Tania Heap and NetballSmart Development Officer, Katie Adamson.
Fundamental Movements and Self Care with Rangatahi
Both Melissa and Katie ran sessions with the young athletes. Melissa focused on fundamental movements, and the critical role they play in netball, while Katie provided essential advice on athlete self-care and ensuring players understand the importance of maintaining their well-being.
One young person says the development day was a great opportunity for them to grow as a player.
“I’ve learned techniques that I can directly apply to my game,” she says.

Open and transparent coaching sessions
Rob and Tania led the coaching sessions on game analysis and planning for both training sessions and annual season plans.
Whangārei coach, Ngaire Angus says it was really valuable to see the detail and planning that makes a great coach.
As someone experienced in netball but relatively new to coaching, Ngaire says she appreciated the blend of practical and theoretical activities throughout the day.
“There was so much value in the open transparent and relevant way the sessions were delivered,” she says.
“I really enjoyed having the opportunity to discuss key elements, ask questions and have a good kōrero throughout the day.”
