In a heartwarming show of community spirit, Northern Mystics players Phoenix Karaka and Grace Nweke, took part in the Barfoot and Thompson annual fundraising Quiz Night aimed at raising money for the Starship Foundation.
The event, which was held last month, attracted over 600 people who gathered, not only to test their trivia knowledge but also to support the cause of the Starship Foundation, caring for New Zealand’s most vulnerable children.
Athletes Auctioned to Join the Teams
Both Grace and Phoenix joined other New Zealand athletes, from the Stars, the Black Ferns Sevens, Auckland Rugby Union and the Paris 2024 Olympics team, in volunteering their time for the evening.
In addition to the quiz, attendees had the opportunity to bid for one of the athletes to join their table in a light-hearted and fun auction, which contributed to the total funds raised.
Mystics Vice Captain, Phoenix says it’s always entertaining being a part of the evening and although the auction can feel a little daunting, it’s all in good fun and for such a good cause.
"I think both Grace and I are just really grateful for the opportunity to be able to give back, and the Starship Foundation is so incredibly important.”

Netball Northern Operations Manager, Chris Tennant says the annual event does an incredible job at raising funds, and she’s pleased the Mystics can be a part of it with players attending the event each year.

Funds Raised on the Night
The fundraising evening was a huge success, raising $175,890 for the Starship Foundation and highlighting the power of sports teams like the Northern Mystics in making a positive impact off the court.
